SV Werder Bremen will close out matchday 32 away at RB Leipzig (14/05/2023, 17:30 CEST). Head coach Ole Werner was optimistic during the pre-match press conference, despite the news that Amos Pieper is out for the remainder of the season (ankle), Niclas Füllkrug is unavailable this weekend (calf) and Milos Veljkovic remains a doubt. “Familiarising ourselves with the various formations doesn’t make things easy for us,” he said, “Nevertheless, every player that steps foot out on the pitch has a duty to play.”

After hosting Bayern München last weekend, the Green-Whites now come up against another side in the top half of the table. The team are looking to build on last weekend’s spirited performance. “If we work together and defend as a unit, then we always have a chance to win games,” said Werner. “I’m optimistic that we will pick up points if the team continue to fight.”

Asked about the opponent’s strengths, Werner listed their attacking qualities, as well as the quality of their squad. “They have a lot of individual talent at every position and aren’t dealing with many injuries, which you can see in the way they play,” he said. “For us, it will come down to defending well but we also know that we won’t be able to find a solution for everything that will come our way. We need to pick out our chances and keep our opponents busy. We did that against Bayern already, and this time we will also need to be more clinical.”

Werder will be looking to take all three points home with them this weekend, in order to move one step closer to securing safety. Should the sides around them in the table fail to pick up points, this would also be of great benefit to the Green-Whites. However, the team are fully focused on themselves and on achieving the aims they have set for themselves. “Nothing will change about our approach. We know that we are up against a strong opponent, and that we will need to give it 100%,” said Werner. “We can only influence our own performance and are focused on ourselves.”
