The Werder squad didn’t come out of the double-game week unscathed either. Milos Veljkovic was unable to train on Thursday and is unlikely to be an option for Saturday, but Niclas Füllkrug is back on the training pitch. “We can line-up in different ways and will see what makes sense from a physical and mental perspective,” said Werner, hinting at a possible rotation of players. “We have done very well at reverting back to familiar things. That’s why I don’t think we will see seven or eight changes to the side, but I don’t want to rule out one or two changes to the side that started in Munich.”
In opponents RB Leipzig, the Green-Whites are hosting one of the league’s most in-form sides. Werner watched them live against Mainz (1-1) back in October and stated that they have developed since then. “They appear very structured and bring their individual quality, as well as that of their team, to the pitch,” the 34-year-old said. “We will concentrate of ourselves and want to play our best game possible and be as difficult an opponent for them as we can.”
Werner praised his side for their performances so far this season, which has led to their strong league position. Nevertheless, the head coach does not expect his team to rest on their laurels. “The points that we have aren’t enough to achieve our goals for the season,” emphasised Werner. “We challenge ourselves to develop constantly. We will do everything we can in every game we play, and this is also the case against RB Leipzig where we want to get the points – we still need a lot of points.”
