SV Werder managed to grab a point from their first home game of the season against VfB Stuttgart in the dying seconds. After 94 minutes Bremen were staring at a 1-2 defeat, but Oliver Burke equalised for the Green-Whites with the last kick of the game. Werder captain Marco Friedl thought the draw was a justified result: “I found we started the game sensationally and really put the pressure on. We fully deserved to go into the lead and had the chance to make it 2-0. From then on, however, we stopped playing football. At the end of the day, we have to live with the point,” declared Friedl.

Werder.de has summarised the views of Werner and the players:

On the course of the game

Ole Werner: “We got off to a good start, which is something we set out to do. From then on, we unfortunately lost control of the game at points, but we regained it in the second half. We managed it well, but we just weren’t able to find that change of pace at the top end of pitch. Stuttgart defended that really well. I’m pleased that we were rewarded in the end. We played with passion and gave a decent performance at home. We weren’t at our absolute best today, so I’m happy that we were able to take at least a point from the game. I always believe in the team right up until the final seconds and that they can pull something amazing off. Football writes wild headlines every weekend.”

Niklas Füllkrug: “That was only my 100th game. If I hadn’t been injured so often, then I would have already played twice as many. It was a great game, however, and we were able to end the game on what feels like a happy ending. There were three decisive moments in the build up, all of which we won. Burkey showed great commitment and that is exactly what we need from him.”

Marco Friedl: “I found we started the game sensationally and really put on the pressure. We fully deserved to go into the lead and had the chance to make it 2-0. From then on, however, we stopped playing football. Stuttgart grew into the game and we gave too much away. We let our standards drop in various areas and didn’t win the second ball. Then Stuttgart came back and scored, which was completely deserved. At the end of the day, we have to live with the point.”

Oliver Burke: “I’m really happy with my goal and I think it was a really important point for us. Today was extremely hot with difficult conditions, but I found we played well overall. Our first goal was really good and we countered really well as well. It was a very intense game.”

Niklas Stark: “It was a nice debut for me. I have the feeling that had we maintained a bit more control over the game, then we could have got more from it. Nevertheless, it was really great for me to play at the wohninvest WESERSTADION and to get a point at the end of the day. It is always nice when you score a late goal. It was a game that will definitely stay in my memory. Your first game for Werder is a big thing. I’m happy that I was able to do that today.”

On the atmosphere

Ole Werner: “We were supported so well last year and this year will certainly be no different. As a promoted side, we need the support of the fans. But that’s something we can rely on, as was the case today. Even when we are behind, everyone was positive and got behind the team. That was an important factor today and will be for the rest of the season.”

Oliver Burke: “The fans were brilliant. They supported us the entire time as if it were the final minutes of the game.”

Marco Friedl: “The atmosphere was excellent. I had goosebumps when I was stood in the tunnel. It was amazing to experience this today. The fans got behind us brilliantly.”

Niclas Füllkrug: “It was even more special than usual today. You could feel the energy and euphoria. Everyone was standing and supporting us from the first whistle.”

Niklas Stark: “On the bench you could feel it and when I came into the game I felt it again. In the final stage of the game, we needed that boost to chase the forward balls, to look for Fülle who would extend the play and make the right runs - and the fans gave it to us. It worked. Everyone worked together in the stadium.”

On the first two league games

Ole Werner: “You can see how tight it is and how the little things make all the difference. Especially in Wolfsburg we played very well over a long period of time. Today we were strong in different phases of the game. In both games we matched the opponents and were competitive.”
