On Wednesday 19.10.22 at 18:00 CEST, SV Werder Bremen have their second round cup game in Paderborn. The visitors lie in 2nd place in the second division after twelve games and have been the strongest attacking side in their league. “The games that I have been to in Paderborn have always been turbulent. They often have an open and somewhat wild character to them,” said head coach Ole Werner during his pre-match press conference.

The squad: Leonardo Bittencourt and Milos Veljkovic were back in team training on Monday and will be in the squad against Paderborn. Marco Friedl and Christian Gross however will not take part in the game. Captain Friedl is still not ready following the injury to his adductor area that he picked up during the Mainz game. Christian Groß is suffering with an illness. Nicolai Rapp and Manuel Mbom are still working on their comebacks as well. Rapp continues to be plagued with a muscle injury, whilst Mbom is still in strength training recovering from his achilles tear.

Ole Werner on the opposition: “I expect a tight game. We know from last year just how difficult it will be against Paderborn. Not a lot has changed since then. Paderborn are a side that always have their attacking blinkers on, they’re really strong going forward and don’t hide not matter who they are playing. It can definitely become turbulent. That’s something we are prepared for.”

Werder’s record against the second division side and high-scoring games

Head-to-head record: Wednesday night’s game between the two sides will be their seventh meeting in a competitive setting. The record points to a slight advantage for the Green-Whites. They have recorded three victories thus far, whereas SC Paderborn have two wins in the books. The most recent clash between the two clubs took place on matchday 20 of last season. It was an exciting and action-packed match that offered everything from a two-goal lead for Paderborn as well as two disallowed goals. In the end, SVW won what appeared to be an all-but-lost game thanks to a late header from former captain Ömer Toprak 4-3.

High-scoring affairs: A game between Werder and Paderborn has never ended 0-0. In the last three games, there have been at least five goals in every single one. In addition, every game had witness three goals before even half time.

Success against second division sides: The Green-Whites have progressed in every single one of their 18 cup games against second division opponents since the 1997/1998 season. Only Bayern Munich had as long a winning run against teams from divisions below lasting from 2005-2019.
