Around three months ago, Werder Bremen signed Oliver Burke from Sheffield United. Since then, the Scot has been building his reputation as an important member of Ole Werner’s squad and has impressed in particular with his blistering pace. Although he has mainly been utilised as a substitute thus far, he has certainly made an impression when he has come onto the pitch. He has netted twice in seven appearances and has picked up one assist. The 25-year-old wants to use the international break as an opportunity to continue to make a good impression and to make a case for more playing time.

We spoke to Oliver about his first few months in Bremen, his role within the team, the international break and his aims.

Hey, Oliver! Let us first of all take a look back at the Leverkusen game. Are you happy with a point or disappointed that you couldn’t turn it into three?

Oliver Burke: “No, I think a point against Leverkusen was a decent result in the end. Every point counts and it was very important for us to come away with something. We showed great character in this game.”

Is this “character” a real strength of the team at this moment in time?

Oliver Burke: “I think so, yes. You can literally feel the passion at this moment in time. Everyone works hard, both for themselves and for each other. Everyone is also aware of how important and how difficult the Bundesliga is. We know that we need to fight hard in every game and there will be no easy opponents. We are training really well and there is a real chemistry in the group.”

You are invigorating the strike force with your goals at the moment and it has livened up the competition between Fülle, Duckschi and yourself. How would you assess the situation?

Oliver Burke: “Fülle is scoring and Duckschi is playing really well. Some people in the media are saying that he (Marvin Ducksch) isn’t scoring goals at this moment in time but he is really important for the team and it’s only a matter of time before he scores again. Everyone in the team would say exactly the same thing about him. My role is about pushing my teammates, giving my all in training and doing everything I can, both on and off the pitch, in order to help the team. Everyone here is playing an important role.”

Burke: Ready to take the chance whenever it comes

It sounds like there is really healthy competition…

Oliver Burke: “Yes. It is a long season, we need to remain optimistic and show that we are here to get the results we need in order to  better position ourselves in the league table. Everyone needs to fight for their place in the team but the competition needs to remain healthy. We need to push each other in the right way. It’s important for me to be prepared and ready to take the opportunity, whenever it comes my way.”

I feel really happy here. I have a great understanding with my teammates, the coaches and everyone at the club. I have felt really welcome

The last few years haven’t always been easy for you. But a short time ago you told the media that you wake up with a smile on your face every morning in Bremen. Can you describe what it’s like to be a part of this team and this club?

Oliver Burke: “I was really excited the minute I heard the club was interested in me. I felt straight away that it would be a great opportunity for me. The last few years haven’t always gone the way I expected. There have been high points, but there have also been times when I haven’t got much playing time. I feel really happy here. I have a great understanding with my teammates, the coaches and everyone at the club. I have felt really welcome.”

Attention now turns to the friendly against Hannover on Thursday. Do you see this game as a chance to show what you can do?

Oliver Burke: “Without a doubt. I will treat it as a proper game and not as a friendly. I want to show the coach that I am ready to play. It’s a great chance for the lads who don’t play that often to get some minutes under their belt. It’s a way for everyone to get ready for the league games. I want to show that I am fit and I will give my best.”

Some players are now away on international duty, but what are your personal aims for these two weeks?

Oliver Burke: “We will continue to train but we also have a bit of time off. I will use these days in order to reflect. It’s important to catch up with yourself but it is also a good opportunity to regroup as a team. Everyone comes back with a fresh mindset. I will use to the free time as a chance to relax and to visit my family and my son. It is very important to see your family and friends when you get the time in order to do so.”
