According to Pieper, the good atmosphere amongst the players is one of the reasons for the success on the pitch in the first half of the season. He also believes that it will help Werder pick up from where they left off after the winter break: “If one of us is heavy-legged or feels a bit down, we’re always there to give each other a boost,” explained the 24-year-old. The defender also believes that this team spirit may still have something to do with last season’s promotion: “I experienced this sort of thing during the successes in my youth days. When you achieve something at the end of the season, you can’t wait to get back together with your teammates. You can see that in every one of them right now.”
The defender believes that the amount of time the players spend with each other off the pitch is something special: “We spend a lot of time together, even off the field. I haven’t experienced it to this extent before. We grab a coffee or eat together at the training base, so no one is ever alone. You’re not always hanging out with the same person, we spend so much time with each other and we know each other on a personal, not just sporting level.” According to Pieper, this culture helped him fit in when he arrived at the club: “You feel at home straight away. I can confirm that is the case as a new arrival. This helps a lot when you want to achieve things together as a team.”
