On Sunday afternoon, SVW beat VfB Stuttgart 2-0 away from home. After a streaky opening period, Werder grew into the game and were able to create a couple of good chances. Füllkrug even headed in, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul on his part. One moment shortly before the end of the first half also caused a stir when Niklas Schmidt was brought down on the edge of the Stuttgart penalty area. Referee WIllenborg decided on a free kick which Ducksch put just wide of the post. In the second half, Jens Stage fired Werder ahead (59’) with a wonder goal, before Marvin Ducksch (77’) made it 2-0.

Squad news: New arrival Maximilian Philipp was unfortunately unable to recover in time from his ankle problem. He was replaced in the squad by Tom Berger, who impressed in the recent friendly matches.

Starting eleven: Pavlenka – Jung, Stark, Pieper, Stage, Ducksch, Bittencourt, Füllkrug, Schmidt, Friedl, Groß.

The bench: Zetterer – Veljkovic, Salifou, Dinkci, Buchanan, Gruev, Berger, Chiarodia.

Goalless first half

Highlights from the first half:

4th minute: Guirassy gets the first chance and shoots a good 20 yards from the Werder goal. Pavlenka catches well.

9th minute: Pavlenka receives the ball from a back pass and hits the ball with his standing foot when clearing. Stuttgart cannot capitalise, however, and Pavlenka saves well.

15th minute: Now for Werder: Schmidt lays off Bittencourt excellently, who hits the ball well, but Müller is up to the task and makes the save.

16th minute: Füllkrug is given the ball and comes down the right-hand side. His cross to Jung is good, but a Stuttgart player manages to get in the way of the shot and clears.

26th minute: Füllkrug sends the ball to Schmidt, who goes down in the penalty area. The Werder players appeal for a penalty, while referee Willenborg lets play carry on.

36th minute: The ball is in the back of the net for Werder! Jung crosses the ball perfectly to Füllkrug, who just has to head in. The referee, however, blows the whistle just before for a foul committed by Füllkrug.

38th minute: Anton takes the ball boldly to the Bremen goal and hits the ball just over the crossbar.

39th minute: An Ito free kick is blocked and goes for a corner, which is cleared. Schmidt then reacts quickly, stealing the ball from a Stuttgart player and picking up the pace. He is brought down on the edge of the penalty area, and the resulting free kick from Ducksch goes only just wide of the post.

45th+1 minute: Führich and Pfeiffer combine well to get through the Werder back line and are denied by a fantastic Pavlenka save. The resulting corner comes to Pfeiffer, who heads over the bar.

59th minute: GOALLLL! Jens Stage scores spectacularly for SVW to make it 1.0! Füllkrug and Ducksch hold the ball well and the it comes off a Stuttgart player to Stage, who doesn’t hesitate and puts the ball in the net.

67th minute: Führich is played in, but Stark is able to cover and clears for a corner, which is dangerous, and Nartay’s shot goes behind for another corner. The next attempt from Stuttgart is cleared comfortably.

72nd minute: The ball is played to Ducksch and he carries it straight towards Müller. Three Stuttgart players, however, manager to hold him up, Ducksch goes down with no free kick given.

77th minute: Marvin Ducksch scores doubles SVW's lead to 2-0! Füllkrug lays him off and Ducksch fires it into the top corner. WHAT A GOAL.

87th minute: The ball comes into the Werder penalty area, where Stuttgart appeal for a hand ball. The Werder players, on the other hand, appeal for a foul. Referee Willenborg didn’t see anything and lets the game play on.

90th+5 minute: Full time! Werder Bremen beat VfB Stuttgart away from home.

Summary: An even game ended 2-0. Stage and Ducksch were able to secure three points for Werder with two exceptional goals. Both teams fought hard throughout, the game was characterised by misplaced passes and fouls. In the second half, SVW showed greater will and deserved to win 2-0 against VfB Stuttgart.
