That was fun! This game will be talked about in Bremen for a long time yet. SVW beat Möchengladbach 5-1 on Saturday evening during matchday 8 of the Bundesliga season. After an unbelievable first half that witnessed a brace from Niclas Füllkrug (5’, 13’), a first goal of the season for Marvin Ducksch (8’) and an own goal from Gladbach’s Bensebaini (37’), the mood was a festive one in Bremen even before half time. The fans saw a toned down second half, but there were still chances for both sides with Marcus Thuram (63’) finding the net for Gladbach before Mitchell Weiser got Werder’s fifth (73’).

Squad news and formation: Werder head coach Ole Werner made just one change to the starting eleven from the away game at Bayer Leverkusen. Niklas Stark replaced the suspended Amos Pieper. It was the defender’s first start in a Werder kit. Tactically, Werder used a flexible 3-5-2 system against Gladbach.

Starting eleven: Pavlenka – Stark, Friedl, Veljkovic – Jung, Gross, Schmid, Gruev, Weiser – Ducksch, Füllkrug

Bench: Zetterer – Stage, Burke, Bittencourt, Dinkci, Schmidt, Rapp, Buchanan, Agu

Pure ecstasy

Highlights from the first half:

5th minute: YESSSS! 1-0! Werder take an early lead: Schmid crosses from the right hand side into the six-yard box. There he finds Füllkrug running in and able to slide the ball into the net.

8th minute: 2-0! Fireworks to start this game! Schmid tries to take the ball around Sommer, but the keeper is able to just make the save. The ball, however, falls directly to Ducksch, who is in the perfect poacher’s position. He slots the ball home from 14 metres out.

13th minute: UNBELIEVABLE! SVW get another one. It’s 3-0 after 13 minutes. Ducksch gets into the left hand side of the box, looks up to see Füllkrug arriving at the penalty spot. Fülle says thank you very much from 5 yards out.

29th minute: Another great chance for Werder. Ducksch connects with a cross from the right. His powerful header goes narrowly wide.

37th minute: 4-0! Ducksch gets most of the credit. Werder’s striker crosses from the left flank. There is no Werder player nearby but Gladbach’s Bensebaini unluckily heads into his own net.

43rd minute: Scally breaks through on the right and makes a sharp cross across the box to where Stindl is lingering. He connects well but Pavlenka gets a strong fist to the powerful shot and makes a great save.

45+1 minutes: Half time! It has already been a historical game. Werder have never jumped into a 3-0 lead as quickly as that.

A win at home!

Highlights from the second half:

59th minute: Füllkrug crosses from the right hand side. Weiser leaps up around the six-yard box and rifles the ball against the post. So close to a fifth!

63rd minute: Frustration, but it is ‘only’ still 4-1. Thuram receives a precise past in behind the defence. He goes around Pavlenka and routinely slots the ball into the net.

68th minute: The Foals still haven’t given up here. Thuram moves deep into the box and then heels the ball back to Hofmann who smashes the ball against the upright. After that there’s a bit of ping-pong around the box. Luckily Gladbach can’t squeeze it in.

73rd minute: 5-1! Is that lights out? Werder restore the deficit! Füllkrug gets to the baseline, waits a second before laying up perfectly for the oncoming Weiser. It’s the perfect build up and Weiser rounds it all off with an exquisite volley!

90+1 minutes: Celebration time in Bremen! A fantastic footballing evening comes to an end. It’s a 5-1 win for Werder against Gladbach.

Summary: It’s a party at the wohninvest WESERSTADION! That was a green and white festival! After an unbelievable first half, in which simply everything went right, fans watched a second half with chances on both sides. The bottom line is an incredibly well-deserved home win for SVW, which left everyone wanting more.
