SV Werder Bremen came away from Mainz with a point after netting two late equalizers in a 2-2 draw. The hosts got off to a strong start, while Werder sat back and waited for opportunities to counter-attack. The Green-Whites lacked precision in their passes for much of the first half, as neither side was able to create much. That changed from the 85th minute onwards, as Mainz first took the lead through Ajorque. Just 80 seconds later, Werder drew level through Stage (87’). The hosts would then retake the lead through Weiper in the third minute of injury time, before Füllkrug bagged his 16th goal of the season to rescue a point for SVW (90’+5).

Team news: Head coach Ole Werner made just two changes to the starting line-up, as Jens Stage and Leonardo Bittencourt returned to the team.

Starting XI: Pavlenka - Jung, Stark, Stage, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Füllkrug, Veljkovic, Friedl, Groß.

The bench: Zetterer - Philipp, Schmid, Dinkci, Schmidt, Buchanan, Gruev, Mbom, Chiarodia.

Werder grow into game after slow start

First-half highlights:

2nd minute: The first chance of the afternoon belongs to the hosts, as Caci is able to break down the left wing. He was unable to find a teammate with his pass, as Pavlenka then kept out a shot from Widmer.

7th minute: Mainz attack down the right wing, as Widmer looks to cut a ball back to the top of the box. Friedl intercepts it and sends it forward to Füllkrug, but he is unable to get past Hanche-Olsen without fouling him.

21st minute: Füllkrug attempts a volley following a corner from Ducksche, but Zentner is able to parry his shot with an excellent save.

30th minute: Füllkrug wins a free-kick within range of goal. Ducksch steps up to take it, but sends his shot to the left of the target.

32nd minute: Ducksch picks out Weiser with a great ball through, who then lays it off to Füllkrug. The striker looks to cross it to Ducksch, but his attempt is blocked by a Mainz defender.

43rd minute: Füllkrug is through on goal with only Zentner to beat, but the attack is cut short by the whistle, as the striker was offside prior to starting his run.

45th minute: Ajorque goes to ground inside the box, but referee Brand allows play to continue.

Two late equalisers for Werder

Second-half highlights:

52nd minute: Mainz have the ball in the back of the net, as Stach scores from a rebound. It won’t count, however, as the linesman’s flag is up!

61st minute: Pavlenka is on hand to punch away a header from Kohr.

71st minute: Lee sends in a cross from the left flank, but Pavlenka is able to get to it easily. Mainz regroup and mount another attack, forcing Pavlenka to make another save. He collides with the post in doing so, but is able to continue.

80th minute: Lee records two quick chances, but both are saved by Pavlenka.

85th minute: Ludovic Ajorque scores the opener for 1. FSV Mainz 05.

87th minute: Werder respond instantly! Jens Stage heads in the equaliser just 80 seconds later, from a Mitchell Weiser cross!

90th +3 minute: Mainz retake the lead, as Nelson Weiper makes it 2-1.

90th +5 minute: Niclas Füllkrug equalises again! It's another late goal for Werder, and his 16th of the season, to make it 2-2!

Summary: As expected, Mainz posed a tough challenge for the Green-Whites. Werder struggled to find their way into the game in the first half, with the game only really picking up steam from the 85th minute onward. FSV took the lead twice, but Werder were able to respond instantly twice, as the match ended in a deserved 2-2 draw.
