Werder beat FC Groningen 6-1 in their first friendly of the day. Both teams started the game well and had lots of chances in the first half. Werder were unfazed by Groningen’s early goal and raced into a 3-1 lead at the break. Marvin Ducksch, who scored two goals in seven minutes to turn the game on its head (13’,16’), completed his hat-trick in the second half (67’). There were no changes for the Green-Whites at half time and they went on to stamp their authority on the game in the second half. Newcomer Lee Buchanan got on the score sheet (37’), as did Niclas Füllkrug (48’, 52’). Although Werder made it 6-1 with over 20 minutes still to play, they kept up the pressure on their opponents, with Marco Friedl hitting the crossbar. The game petered out as it reached its climax and Groningen managed to fashion some chances, but they failed to test Pavlenka.
