SV Werder Bremen have won their first game of the 2022/23 season. In the first round of the DFB-Pokal, the Green-Whites met Energie Cottbus in the Stadion der Freundschaft and produced a 2-1 win. Werder started the game strongly and created some significant chances. On the stroke of half time, the Bundesliga team cranked up the pressure and took the lead through Romano Schmid (43). Unchanged in the second half, the visitors continued to dominate the game and were able to stretch their lead through Mitchell Weiser in the 73rd minute. However, only six minutes later, Energie Cottbus pulled one back with Tim Heike’s finish (79). The final stages became tense again. In the last ten minutes, the hosts threw everyone forward and had several scoring opportunities. Keeper Pavlenka was always in the right place and secured the victory.

Team news: Ole Werner’s team sheet saw three newcomers come into the starting eleven for the first competitive match of the 2022/2023 season. New players Amos Pieper, Lee Buchanan as well as returnee Mitchell Weiser all started the match. For Marco Friedl, it was his first competitive game as Werder captain.

The starting-eleven: Pavlenka – Pieper, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Füllkrug, Veljkovic, Schmid, Buchanan, Friedl and Groß.

The bench: Zetterer – Jung, Stage, Burke, Schmidt, Rapp, Agu, Gruev and Chiarodia.

10th minute: Weiser receives the ball on the right, dribbles into the penalty area. He finds Ducksch, lurking on the penalty spot. Ducksch pings the ball against the left post.

27th minute: Cottbus keeper Sebald plays the ball from his own box to the feet of Marvin Ducksch. Ducksch quickly tees up Füllkrug, who shoots himself. Sebald makes up for his mistake and parries the shot away.

Cottbus come back into the game in the final stages

Highlights of the second half:

48th minute: The first significant chance of the second half belonged to the hosts. Borgmann lets one fly from about 20 meters out. The ball sneaks just past the right post.

51st minute: Füllkrug lays the ball across the penalty area. Ducksch only has to tap it in but doesn’t connect with the bobbling ball, instead connecting with the post, yet again.

73rd minute: GOALLL! Mitchell Weiser puts Bremen 0-2 up! Füllkrug plays the ball to Ducksch on the wing. His cross falls perfectly into the path of Weiser, who only has to nudge the ball in.

79th minute: Tim Heike gets a goal back for FC Energie Cottbus, 1-2.

82nd minute: The third major chance for Marvin Ducksch in this game. His shot on goal from about 18 meters out is cleared for a corner by keeper Sebald.

89th minute: Energie Cottbus have another chance themselves. The ball is deflected slightly and the hosts win a corner. Pavlenka is able to clear.

Summary: Werder Bremen dominated the game, especially in the first half, and deserved to take the lead. The Green-Whites created plenty of chances but often failed to beat the woodwork or Cottbus keeper, Sebald. Bremen managed to maintain the pressure for a long time and eventually stretched their lead to 0-2. However, a quick-fire goal brought the hosts back into the game. With it, Energie Cottbus became an uncomfortable opponent in the final stages of the game, as expected. At the end of the day, the Bundesliga side deserved to progress to the next round of the cup.
