When SV Werder travel to 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday (08/4, 15:30 CEST), the Green-Whites will have a score to settle. On the one hand, they want to make up for the 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture and get important points to cement their place in the league. On the other hand, the lessons learned from the last game against Hoffenheim will be applied. “There is a period coming that we should look forward to,” said head coach Ole Werner, who was optimistic at the press conference on Thursday as he looked ahead to the upcoming match against the Zerofivers. “We can now reap the rewards for the work we have put in so far this season.”

Team news: After his goal against Hoffenheim, Amos Pieper will not be able to prove his goal scoring ability once again against Mainz. The defender has an ankle problem and will therefore not be in the squad on Saturday. Felix Agu will also be unavailable due to injury, as well as Eduardo dos Santos Haesler, who is out with a knee injury.

Head coach Ole Werner on the opposition: “We know about the Mainz’s strengths. They are a team who play with intensity and are very good at winning second balls. We are expecting a hectic, hard-fought game and a lot of it will come down to the duels and physicality. Set pieces could also play a big part, as Mainz are very dangerous from them. Above all, for us it will be about controlling this type of game, standing up to it and bringing our own strengths.”

Kick-off time and venue suit SVW

Previous meetings: There have been 31 meetings in the Bundesliga between SVW and FSV since Mainz were promoted in 2004. The record is a good one for Werder, having been victorious on 14 occasions, while Mainz have won 11 games and six have ended in a draw. Most recently, the hosts were able to add a win to their record when they won 2-0 at the wohninvest WESERSTADION.

Successful at prime time: Saturday at 15:30 is a time that is an integral part of life for many Bundesliga fans. For SV Werder it is also a prime time for points this season. SVW have picked up 15 of their 31 points on Saturday afternoon.

Successful away at Mainz: Since FSV’s promotion in summer 2004, the Green-Whites have not been as successful in any other away game in the Bundesliga. The Bremen side have left with all three points on nine occasions, and their average of 1.93 points is also higher than in any other Bundesliga away match involving Werder.
