59th minute: Now it’s time for Werder to attack. After multiple wasted opportunities, the Green-Whites try their luck through Christian Gross’s long range effort from 18 metres out. The ball deflects out for a corner, which ultimately comes to nothing.

65th minute: That was close! Da Costa wants to cross into the path of the on-coming Onisiwo. Pavlenka just gets his fist to ball first only by a couple milliseconds.

66th minute: Jae-Sung Lee doubles Mainz’s lead. The shot took a strong deflection off Amos Pieper on the way into the net.

70th minute: Huge chance for Werder! Mitchell Weiser plays his way into the penalty area and finds Marvin Ducksch in the middle, eager for a chance. Zentner manages to claw out a save from our number seven’s shot.

74th minute: Onisiwo beats Jens Stage and shoots, but it flies narrowly over.

80th minute: Lee Buchanan crosses into the Mainz penalty area from the right. The ball accidently deflects off Hack and falls at the feet of Niklas Schmidt. He shoots and sends the ball inches past the left post. So close!

Summary: Mainz weren’t an easy opponent, especially in the second half attacking a lot down the right through Da Costa. Although Werder dominated possession in the first half, they allowed themselves to be pressed by Mainz and couldn’t fight back after the first goal went in. The visitors dominated proceedings in the second half and were able to double their lead. They closed out the came for a well-deserved win.
