SV Werder Bremen are away against RB Leipzig on Sunday, 14th May (17:30 CEST). Following a 2-1 defeat at home to FC Bayern last time out, SVW are looking to get back to winning ways, which would also secure a place in the Bundesliga next season. However, this may already be the case by the time Werder take on Leipzig, depending on the results of the other games on matchday 32. For Leipzig, this fixture is about picking up three points in their quest to qualify for next season’s Champions League, while they have also reached the DFB-Pokal final once again. They will take on Eintracht Frankfurt in a few weeks time.

The squad: Ole Werner is without several players for the trip to Leipzig. Niclas Füllkrug has only trained individually this week and won’t make the squad. Amos Pieper was ruled out for the rest of the season yesterday due to an impending ankle operation. Milos Veljkovic has had a calf issue and is a doubt. Long-term injury concerns Felix Agu and Dikeni Salifou remain unavailable.

The head coach on the opponents: “They are a top side with lots of individual quality in every position. They have also had few injury problems recently, so they should have all that quality available to them. Just like last week, we know we need to defend well. We need to understand that there won’t always be an easy solution to things. Leipzig’s players are always capable of something special, regardless of how well we are doing,” said the 35-year-old.

Better on the road

The last meetings: The two sides have met 11 times since Leipzig’s promotion to the Bundesliga in 2016. Werder have only won twice so far, compared to eight Leipzig victories (D1). RBL won the reverse fixture at the wohninvest WESERSTADION 2-1 thanks to goals from Xaver Schlager and André Silva. Christian Groß got Bremen’s goal.

Leipzig like playing promoted sides: RB Leipzig have lost none of their 26 Bundesliga games against promoted teams (W23, D3). No other club has ever played as many games against promoted sides without losing at least once in the league’s history, while only two sides have enjoyed longer unbeaten runs against promoted teams: FC Bayern (32 games between 2010 and 2018) and SV Werder Bremen (29 games between 1983 and 1989).

Late drama: Niklas Schmidt’s goal against Bayern last weekend was Werder’s 19th in the final 15 minutes of games this season, the most by any side. Leipzig, however, have only conceded three goals in the final quarter of an hour, a league low.

Strong on the road: Werder and VfL Wolfsburg are the only teams to have picked up more points on their travels than at home this season. SVW have collected three more points away from Bremen (19 – 16 at home), a league high.
