SV Werder Bremen were beaten 2-1 (0-0) by RB Leipzig and couldn’t secure a point. In a fast-paced and intense game, Ole Werner’s eleven had to hold on against an attacking Leipzig side. The hosts scored after a chance for Werder to make it 1-0 (66’), but referee Florian Badstübner disallowed the goal after a VAR check due to a foul on Leonardo Bittencourt, who scored shortly afterwards for the Green-Whites to make it 1-0 (70’). After the goal, Leipzig moved up a gear and just a few minutes before the final whistle, Willi Orban equalised (87’), before Dominik Szoboszlai (90+6’) scored the winner to make it 2-1.

Team news: Ole Werner was forced to make two changes compared to the eleven that played against FC Bayern. Christian Groß was forced to miss out on short notice due to a knee problem, while Amos Pieper was also absent due to injury. Ilia Gruev and Milos Veljkovic came in for the two.

Starting XI: Pavlenka - Jung, Stark, Stage, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Schmid, Gruev, Friedl.

The bench: Zetterer - Philipp, Dinkci, Schmidt, Buchanan, Mbom, Chiarodia.

Goalless in the first 45

Highlights from the first half:

4th minute: The Green-Whites attack down the right, and a cross comes into the penalty area, where Leipzig can clear thanks to a sliding challenge.

6th minute: The first few minutes belong to the visitors from Bremen, with Werner’s side pressing well. A long ball from the right-hand side comes towards Jens Stage, who cannot reach it, and Janis Blaswich safely catches the ball.

8th minute: Dominik Szoboszlai charges down the right and moves into the middle before playing the ball into the centre. He cannot find a Leipzig man there, and Amadou Haidara gets the chance to shoot from 20 yards out, which is down the middle and causes Jiri Pavlenka no problems.

14th minute: Now the Green-Whites attack on the right. Mitchell Weiser sprints down the wing and plays a cross to the edge of the six-yard box. Romano Schmid has a chance to head the ball but is unable to beat Mohamed Simakan in the air.

20th minute: Leipzig play the ball out well and just miss the goal. Konrad Laimer hits an excellent pass from midfield over the backline to Timo Werner, who tries to lob the ball over Jiri Pavlenka. Fortunately, the ball goes over the crossbar.

27th minute: Leipzig are playing with speed now as a ball from the centre finds Benjamin Henrichs on the left wing, who crosses first time to Emil Forsberg in the box. His shot is blocked by Jens Stage.

30th minute: Benjamin Henrichs back-heels to Emil Forsberg, who is in the left-hand side of the penalty area and looks for Christopher Nkunku in the middle. He plays a through ball to the back post, but Anthony Jung is alert and clears the ball from the danger zone.

34th minute: Emil Forsberg chips the ball to Christopher Nkunku, who tries to start an attack on the left side of the box. Niklas Stark does brilliantly to defend him as the ball deflects away.

Bittencourt’s goal isn’t enough for a point

Highlights from the second half:

51st minute: Konrad Laimer has a shot from distance, but Jiri Pavlenka dives and can parry the ball to the side.

56th minute: The Green-Whites quickly switch the ball. They can’t find a way forward in the box and the ball is played back to Romano Schmid, who tries from range and shoots just wide of the post.

61st minute: Timo Werner dribbles down the right and then moves into the middle. He takes aim from there and hits the ball just past the left post.

64th minute: A cross from the right by Mitchell Weiser finds Marvin Ducksch in the centre, who only has to tap the ball in with his end of his boot, but just misses! The Green-Whites continue to push forward and Leonardo Bittencourt tries to put the ball in the top corner but can’t find the target.

66th minute: The hosts are on the attack straight after. Mohamed Simakan wins the ball in midfield and passes to Laimer, who drives forward a few yards. He slides Timo Werner through, who only has to play the ball into the centre, where Christopher Nkunku slots the ball home to make it 1-0. VAR will check the goal, however.

67th minute: Florian Badstübner has another look at a foul on Leonardo Bittencourt before the goal. His disallows it, and the score is back at 0-0.

70th minute: Goal for Werder! Just a moment ago, Leipzig’s goal was disallowed, and now Leonardo Bittencourt scores to make it 1-0 by firing the ball into the top left corner!

78th minute: Christopher Nkunku dribbles through the Bremen box and shoots. Pavlenka dives just in time and saves the ball excellently!

87th minute: A cross from Christopher Nkunku comes into the centre, where Willi Orban jumps to head the ball into the net to make it 1-1.

90th+2 minute: The ball finds the back of the net after the Green-Whites play quickly. Eren Dinkci has scored after a long ball was played forward to make it 2-1, but the linesman had already raised his flag for offside.

90th+6 minute: Goal for Leipzig: Christopher Nkunku is on the wing and plays the ball into the middle. Dominik Szoboszlai only has to slide it in to make it 2-1.

90th+7 minute: Full time.

Summary: Werder lose 2-1 to RB Leipzig. Despite a fighting performance and a one goal lead, the Green-Whites cannot reward themselves with a point in the end. Even though the hosts put them under a lot of pressure over 90 minutes and pushed for the goals, SVW stood up well. In the end, however, Leipzig were too clinical and turned the game around within ten minutes.
