In their 2-0 in Bochum, Werder achieved not only their second away win in a row, but also kept a clean sheet for the first time this season. As well as a good defensive performance overall, the key to this result can also be found in some impressive saves from Werder goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka. “It is a great feeling to get a clean sheet again and also important after the last few weeks,” enthused the Werder shotstopper. By this Friday (09.09.22, 20:30 CEST), Werder’s number 1 and his teammates will already be taking on their next opponents, playing Augsburg at home. “Against Augsburg it is a different game once again. We want to win at home, most of all for our fans. Our record at home in the last few months has not been so perfect,” said the 30-year-old to the media on Tueday.

Putting the clean sheet to one side, there was another scary moment involving Pavlenka in Bochum, as his head was clattered into by Takuma Asano as the Bochum striker attempted to run through. ‘Pavlas’ stayed down on the pitch initially, but after some treatment was able to play on. “It is a bit painful,” reported the Czech international, but confirmed his availability for the next game: “It is not so bad that I can’t train or play. I will do some work on the training pitch today. I want to be available for Friday.” It was not the first head injury to Pavlenka this season, having already had a collision with striker Anthony Modeste against Dortmund, and shortly before this having broken his nose in training. “That is just football, sometimes it is painful. But nothing bad has happened."

Having won in Bochum, the Green-Whites sit in eight with eight points after five games, which Pavlenka is pleased with. However, he is disappointed by the number of goals the team have given up. “To have conceded so many goals is obviously a problem, so we have done a lot of video analysis and found out where we have to be better,” said Werder’s last line of defence. “I want to get better and better in every game and to help the team.” Pavlenka suggests he is helped to motivate himself to do this by second goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, who keeps the pressure on his teammate to maintain a high level. “He is a brilliant goalkeeper, a great guy and he trains really well. But, I also put pressure on myself to get better. I still want to take that next step, also with the national team,” explained Pavlenka to conclude.
