Several Werder players have been in action for their respective national teams over the weekend. Jiri Pavlenka, Romano Schmid and Ilia Gruev took part in the qualifiers for the 2024 European Championship, whereas Niclas Füllkrug and Naby Keïta played in friendlies.

On Friday evening (16th June) Niclas Füllkrug’s Germany were defeated 1-0 by Poland in Warsaw. Although the away side enjoyed much more of the ball and had more attempts on goal, Jakub Kiwior’s goal in the 31st minute was enough to secure the win for the hosts. Füllkrug came on for Benjamin Henrichs in the 68th minute but was unable to extend his impressive scoring run for the Germany national team. Naby Keïta’s Guinea fell to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Brazil in Barcelona on Saturday evening (17th June).

Romano Schmid didn’t feature for Austria, who secured a 1-1 draw away in Belgium on Saturday evening. Orel Mangala gave the guests the lead (21’), before Romelu Lukaku equalised just after the hour mark (61’). Jiri Pavlenka stood between the sticks for the Czech Republic as they secured a comfortable 3-0 win over the Faroe Islands. Ilia Gruev played for the entire match as his Bulgaria side drew 1-1 with Lithuania.
