Despite a 2-0 defeat to France, Romano Schmidt had reason to be happy on Thursday evening. Werder’s midfielder celebrated his debut for the Austria senior national team in the UEFA Nations League game in Paris.
The 22-year-old replaced Marcel Sabitzer in the 69th minute at the Stade de France. He could, however, not prevent defeat in the penultimate group game of the UEFA Nations League. Werder captain Marco Friedl did not come on against “Les Bleues” despite featuring on the bench. An ex-Werder player did have something to celebrate though: Marko Arnautovic made his 103rd international appearance for Austria. In doing so, he is now the nation’s joint most capped player ever. He pulled level with another former SVW player in the rankings, Andreas Herzog. An appearance in the home game against Croatia on Sunday would make him the sole record holder.
Again on Friday, Werder midfielder Ilia Gruev is in action on the international stage. His Bulgaria take on Gibraltar. Then on Saturday, Milos Veljkovic and Jiri Pavlenka round off this week’s international action for the Werder squad. Milos’ Serbia face Sweden, whilst Jiri’s Czech Republic must face Portugal.
