Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev has been called up to Bulgaria’s national team squad for the first time. The 22-year-old will be part of the team that plays Gibraltar and North Macedonia at the end of September in the UEFA Nations League. Gruev has previously regularly featured for his country’s U21s.

“Playing for my country is a huge honour. To be called up aged just 22 is a dream. I’m so proud,” explained Gruev. “I was delighted when I found out. It’s such a great feeling when you can play for your country.”

The midfielder is following in the footsteps of his father, also named Ilia, who won 13 caps for Bulgaria.
