What a game! SV Werder Bremen beat Hertha BSC 4-2 (2-0). In the first half, the hosts were barely in the game. A brace from Marvin Ducksch (6’, 27’) put Werder firmly ahead, before Hertha stepped up a gear in the second half. Although Marvin Ducksch (51’) scored again and Mitchell Weiser (63’) increased the lead to 4-0, Hertha came back. Jessic Ngankam scored the first goal for the “Old Lady”, before Dodi Lukebakio converted from the penalty spot to make it 4-2 (79’). In the end, however, SVW were too solid in defence and Ole Werner’s side deserved to take three important points back home.

Team news: Head coach Ole Werner named the same starting eleven for the away match in the capital that played against SC Freiburg. Niclas Füllkrug was still absent due to a calf problem. Captain Marco Friedl was set to celebrate a milestone and play his 100th Bundesliga game for SVW.

Starting XI: Pavlenka - Jung, Stark, Stage, Weiser, Ducksch, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Philipp, Friedl, Groß.

The bench: Zetterer - Pieper, Schmid, Dinkci, Schmidt, Buchanan, Gruev, Chiarodia.

Ducksch scores twice!

Highlights from the first half:

3rd minute: Hertha win the ball back in midfield and move forward quickly. Marco Richter plays to Dodi Lukebakio, who hits his shot straight at Jiri Pavlenka.

6th minute: Plattenhardt crosses on the edge of the six-yard box. Pavlenka is alert, however, and dives to punch the ball away from danger, but the flag was already up on the sideline for offside against Lukebakio.

6th minute: Goal for Werder! Jens Stage has lots of space and drives forward to the edge of the box, where he plays a through ball to Marvin Ducksch, who slides the ball past Oliver Christensen! Werder take an early lead!

14th minute: The guests are in a good position again. Marvin Ducksch stands over a free-kick around 25 yards from goal after a foul on Mitchell Weiser, but hits the ball comfortably over the crossbar.

25th minute: Ducksch plays the ball with speed into the penalty area towards Philipp, but Oliver Christensen stands strong against a shot with no real danger.

27th minute: Goal for Werder, and it’s Marvin Ducksch again! The Green-Whites make their way down the right-hand side, before Christian Groß plays a cross into the centre. Marvin Ducksch is there waiting and heads the ball into the corner to make it 2-0.

29th minute: A long ball breaks down the Hertha defensive line. Philipp controls the ball and sets himself to shoot, and Dardai deflects the ball so that it just goes wide of the right post.

39th minute: Hertha’s striker dribbles through into the Werder penalty area, but is pushed out wide on the left. The cross into the middle is defended well by Milos Veljkovic.

42nd minute: Leonardo Bittencourt makes his way down the left wing and attempts to play the ball to Marvin Ducksch in the centre. He is pressed and therefore has to take the shot first time, and the ball goes just past the left post!

45th minute: Another long ball over the defensive line poses a danger for Hertha! Jens Stage controls the ball and tries to loft it over Oliver Christensen, but over hits his shot and the ball flies over the crossbar.

Highlights from the second half:

48th minute: The home side are now committing a lot forward. Marco Richter is nearly able to shoot on the edge of the penalty area, but Mitchell Weiser is there to block in time. Jessic Ngankam is also not able to successfully dribble, so the chance comes to nothing.

51st minute: Goal for Werder! Marvin Ducksch nets once again to start the celebrations of the nearly 25,000 Werder fans in Berlin! Anthony Jung has too much space in front of goal and squares the ball to Ducksch. He takes the ball and powers it into the net to make it 3-0!

63rd minute: Goal for Werder! Mitchell Weiser makes it 4-0, madness! Augustin Rogel and Oliver Christensen have a mix-up from a back pass, and Weiser does not miss the opportunity. He wins the ball off Hertha’s goalkeeper and slides it into the net.

68th minute: Goal for Hertha. A lack of concentration offers them space, Suat Serdar passes to Jessic Ngankam and he hits the ball past Pavlenka.

71st minute: Eren Dinkci makes a great run on the right wing and dribbles into the penalty area, where he plays the ball into the centre. Romano Schmid hits a shot just past the left post!

73rd minute: Ducksch’s free-kick flies into the penalty area and Oliver Christensen can’t keep hold of the ball. The rebound comes to Jens Stage, who crosses the ball into the box. Marco Friedl jumps and heads the ball just over the crossbar.

77th minute: Jessic Ngankam is brought down in the penalty area by Milos Veljkovic. A penalty is awarded to the hosts.

79th minute: Goal for Hertha. Lukebakio converts and makes it 4-2.

90th+6 minute: Full time!

Summary: Werder deserved to win 4-2 against Hertha BSC and take three important points away with them from the capital. After a dominant and strong first half, SVW started the second half with a lot of confidence and possession. After Hertha scored their second goal, things got a bit more chaotic on the pitch. Towards the end, however, the Green-Whites held their own and gave the hosts little chance, so Hertha were unable to reduce the deficit any further.
