The success story of Niclas Füllkrug this season has another chapter. Werder’s striker has been awarded the Bundesliga Player of the Month award by the DFL. ‘Fülle’ beat out Ramy Bensebaini, Jonas Hofmann (both Borussia Mönchengladbach), Christopher Trimmel (Union Berlin), Florian Kainz (Köln) and Rafal Gikiewicz (Augsburg) to win the award.
“I’m really happy, this is a great award. Also since it was the fans that voted for me it’s a nice recognition,” said Werder’s number 11 when being presented the award. Füllkrug earned the award in particular for his performance on matchday 5. During a stalemate in the away game against VfL Bochum, “Fülle” gave the Green-Whites the lead after scoring a flying header, that is well-worth watching, from a precise Mitchell Weiser cross. Shortly after his goal, Oliver Burke won a penalty. Füllkrug kept his nerve and slotted in to finish the game off at 2-0.
Looking back on his successful September, Werder’s goal scorer emphasised “This is not just my award but the whole squads’. It’s a lot of fun at the moment; I enjoy stepping on the pitch every time. We try to be attacking and I’m more effective for it.” The striker has not got a special location planned for the trophy, “but I will put it somewhere where I can see it once in a while,” he says.
Because the award is presented by the DFL in cooperation with EA SPORTS, it is not only “Fülle” who can look forward to the recognition of his performances. That’s because in FIFA 23 there is a special card with better attributes than the original for the player of the month. Players can acquire the card in the so-called Squad Building Challenges.
