Marco Friedl could only watch from the sidelines as his Werder teammates secured a 1-0 win over Hertha on Friday evening. The Austrian was serving a suspension for his sending off against Freiburg the previous weekend. Punishment served, the 24-year-old can now return to action when the Green-Whites face Schalke 04 at the wohninvest WESERSTADION on Saturday 5th November (18:30 CET). Friedl was in great spirits on Tuesday as he spoke to the media in the Mixed Zone ahead of the clash. “I am really happy that I can be back amongst it once again and I’m full of anticipation going into the game,” explained the captain.

Marco Friedl was initially suspended for two games after his sending off against Freiburg. It was then reduced to just a one-match ban after a successful appeal, in which Michael Gregoritsch came to Friedl’s defence. The Freiburg striker testified that it was just a tangle of legs between the two players. “That just shows what a great sportsman he is. He didn’t have to do that,” said Marco Friedl of his fellow Austrian. Both players even spoke on the phone prior to the tribunal: “I called him up and he explained his version of events and how he believed that he also made contact with me,” continued Friedl.

Ole Werner has lots of options on Saturday evening against Schalke, not least because the new back-three of Amos Pieper, Milos Veljkovic and Niklas Stark put in a more than convincing performance against Hertha last time out. “We played really well against Hertha and allowed them next to nothing. We’re well-equipped at the back and our defenders already have lots of Bundesliga experience under their belts. This competition for places means that every player needs to give it everything,” said Friedl.

Despite the fact that Schalke are bottom of the table, Friedl made it clear that there is no room for complacency on Saturday night: “We know that we need to put in another good performance. There are no teams in this league that you can just breeze past. That’s why we need to be on our toes. Schalke have some tough players at the top of the pitch who are robust and good in the air. Sure, they’re bottom of the table, but they don’t play like it,” warned the defender.
