SV Werder Bremen will host SC Freiburg on Sunday, 16th April 2023 at 15:30 CEST. The visitors, who recently knocked FC Bayern out of the DFB-Pokal, are currently fifth in the table, while Werder recently picked up a point in Mainz and are hoping to get back to winning ways in front of their own fans.
The squad: Ole Werner will be without his top goalscorer on Sunday. Niclas Füllkrug will miss the game due to a calf issue. “He picked up a couple of minor issues during the Mainz game,” explained Werner. Eren Dinkci is a doubt after only training individually during the week. Amos Pieper is definitely available again after his ankle injury.
The head coach on the opponents: “Freiburg are really solid, well organised and clear about the way they want to play football. They also balance risks really well. They don’t let teams get many chances against them after losing the ball. They are extremely strong from set pieces and have scored 40% of their goals in this manner, that’s a lot.”
Last time out: SVW lost 2-0 in Freiburg earlier this season. Captain Marco Friedl was sent off in the 14th minute for a professional foul and it was therefore extremely difficult for Werder to get anything that day. As a result of that, Ole Werner didn’t analyse the match too much. “Receiving a red card so early on was unlucky. It’s obviously really tough to get anything from the game after that. We hope that doesn’t happen again this weekend so that we can end the game with 11 men.”
Current form: Both sides are enduring a dip in form. Freiburg have picked up just two points from their last three Bundesliga games, while Werder’s last win dates back to the end of February (3-0 over VfL Bochum).
