SV Werder left the pitch goalless after 90 minutes in the final pre-season friendly. The Green-Whites and FC Emmen never managed to break the 0-0 deadlock. Both teams started the match strongly and created some good chances, especially in the midfield. It was a fast-paced match throughout and one counterattack followed the next. Nevertheless, both teams defended well, which prevented any opening goals from materialising. In the second half, the pressing was maintained from the beginning as both teams were searching for a breakthrough. Werder’s new signings Jens Stage and Oliver Burke tried their luck on multiple occasions, but either couldn’t quite hit the target or were denied by Oelschägel. In the end, Werder came closer to a winning goal, but weren’t able to break through a strong Emmen defence.

Line-up: Michael Zetterer stood between the sticks for Werder in the second match of the day. New signing Oliver Burke was in attack alongside youngster Nick Woltemade. Youth players Fabio Chiarodia, Ilia Gruev and Lasse Rosenboom also took to the field.

Werder’s starting XI: Zetterer - Stark, Stage, Burke, Schmidt, Rapp, Agu, Gruev, Woltemade, Rosenboom and Chiarodia.

On the bench: Backhaus - Eickhoff and Berger.

Strong start for both teams

First-half highlights:

6’: Rui Mendes makes good progress down the right wing, sidesteps his opponent and shoots the ball narrowly over the crossbar. Good chance for the guests!

15’: Corner for Werder! Niklas Schmidt sends the corner in to the far post, where Nick Woltemade is waiting. The forward sends the ball over Eric Oelschlägel’s goal, however.

25’: Next chance for Bremen! Ilia Gruev sends the ball to Nick Woltemade with a short free-kick and Nick, who is waiting deep in attack, takes a direct strike. Eric Oelschlägel, however is in place to stop it. Werder increase the pressure!

29’: Corner for Emmen, counterattack from Werder! The ball comes in high to the far post, but is dealt with well by the Werder players. Oliver Burke immediately starts a counterattack, but is stopped. The Emmen players ping the ball around, but the resulting shot is well off target.

39’: Double chance for Emmen! First a deflected shot, then a header over the bar! Emmen increase the pressure again and create the next big chance. On the other side, Werder are not rolling over and also get closer to a goal. Both teams want that first goal.

45’: Both teams head into the break without a goal.

Second-half highlights:

59’: The opening minutes of the second half belonged to FC Emmen, who fail to score from a good chance. Now Werder are back in possession and run Emmen’s defence back far up the pitch. After winning the ball, Burke sends the ball wide. Just before that, Lasse Rosenboom had a good chance, which was deflected.

68’: Werder aren’t resting on their laurels! The action begins to move back in Emmen’s half of the pitch. It’s not only a fast-paced game, it’s also a game which is not lacking in challenges and tackles. Every ball is fought for.

75’: Huge chance for Werder! Jens Stage gets in some space for a shot! Following a high cross from Schmidt, the new signing pulls back, but like it has so often in this match, the ball lands in the arms of Oelschlägel.

79’: Werder want the goal more. Oliver Burke is the next to have a good opportunity to score. The Scotsman makes a good run, but hits the ball over the target.

86’: Brilliant save from Zetterer! After a defensive error from Breme, Emmen pounce and pick up the pace. Zetterer can’t quite punch the ball away, but Felix Agu is there to clear it. That was close!

90’: Final whistle! The final pre-season friendly was fast-paced, but goalless.

Summary: Both teams showed from the beginning that they were there to win. The match was fast-paced throughout and full of challenges. In the end, Werder had more chances for the winner, but the ball simply didn’t want to go into the net. No team would be happy with this result and both teams failed to convert many chances.
