In the last two games, Marvin Ducksch finally ended his goal scoring drought by bagging his first two Bundesliga goals for Werder. “Of course I’m really happy, but it wasn’t something that was eating me up before that. I know the quality and the strengths that I have. I also know that I can show those qualities off in the Bundesliga.”
The double goal-scorer, along with Niclas Füllkrug, is growing better and better with every matchday that comes and it appears that the strike partnership can more than hold their own in the Bundesliga. Ducksch expressed, however, that this improvement didn’t just suddenly happen out of thin air. “I worked on myself a lot during preseason. I knew how strong our opponents would be this year, where I would also be required in a defensive capacity, even in my position.”
That interplay with Füllkrug has not always gone so smoothly, however. It was particularly hard for Füllkrug at the start; “It was difficult to start with because we only played with one striker up top. Everyone knows that when a club is in the market for a striker, he shouldn’t be someone who just sits on the bench. It was also tough for him that I was in such good form,” explained Ducksch.
The reason behind why the two strikers work so well together on the pitch is down to, according to Ducksch, their respective personalities. “We deal with each other honestly and correctly. If something isn’t right, we tell the other one directly to their face. We are unique characters and that’s what distinguishes us.”
Alongside their special relationship, “Fülle” also suits him in terms of his abilities on the pitch. “Particularly when you play with two strikers, I still need my freedom. I can go a bit wider, looking for space down the wing, and I know exactly where he is in front of me. I know what he wants, and he knows what I want. He’s the best strike partner I’ve played with so far,” said Ducksch, gushing about working alongside Füllkrug.
