The 89th minute, the 90+3rd minute, the 90+5th minute and a 3-2 away win. It could not have come at a better time for any Werder fan. All three goals came in the last few minutes of the game, and were all score by substitutes. Head coach Ole Werner was ecstatic after his side’s first and spectacular away win: “I’ve never experienced anything like it. It was a very unusual game but the better team definitely won. I’m really happy about that; the team was rewarded today,” said the head coach.

WERDER.DE have summarised the interviews of the players.

On the course of the game

Niklas Schmidt: “We played with courage. If we were more courageous, we would have gone into half-time with a few goals as well. Nevertheless, huge praise should go to the team, we played really well. We simply have the belief, as you saw today, that we can show our quality in the Bundesliga.”

Amos Pieper: “We put in a really structured performance. We could have prevented the goals we conceded, yet we gave up very few chances, especially in the second half. We controlled the ball and were ever-present. What Lee did was unbelievable. Schmidt and Burke also did incredibly well. Getting a win here is extremely difficult. Being behind for so long, then to come back and win it, is simply extraordinary. To win here is hard, but to win here like we did is even more special.”

Oliver Burke: “I actually don’t have the words for it. It was insane. We had a huge mountain to climb and I’m proud of our performance today. I’m really happy for the boys and for the team; everyone has trained long and hard and it’s paying off now.”

On the team's mentality

Oliver Burke: “You have to believe in yourself and the team at all times and that’s what we did today. Nothing comes from nothing, but we know what we can do and how hard we train. We are a really strong team, even in the Bundesliga. We showed that today. If you don’t believe in your team, your in the wrong sport.”

Ole Werner: “I’ve never experienced anything like that before. It was a very unusual game but the better team definitely won. I’m really happy about that – the team was rewarded today. The team believes in themselves and that’s how we were able to secure our first win in the Bundesliga.”

On his late winner

Oliver Burke: “As a striker, you have to find any hole you can in the opposition’s defence, and I did that well today. I’m always hungry for goals and being able to score in back-to-back games is really cool. I simply put my head down and ploughed on through and hit the ball as hard as I could – and it worked. It’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored, and the pass from Mitchell was perfect. I’m insanely happy to have been able to score again.”
