When SV Werder travel to VfL Bochum on Saturday for their away game, a whole heap of fans will be coming along on the journey to support their team on their travels. The away end at Bochum is sold out – so, expect a special atmosphere. “I have good memories from Bochum and can always remember unbelievable support from the Bremen fans. It is a small, fiery stadium with a great atmosphere. It will go down to the wire,” explained Clemens Fritz, Werder’s sporting director and head of scouting. “There is a good atmosphere everywhere in the ground; it’s a strong crowd. We have a few fans who have our back and are coming along. So, I’m just really looking forward to an incredible atmosphere,” concurred head coach Ole Werner.

Squad situation: Ole Werner must do without Leonardo Bittencourt at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion. The midfielder was unable to train this week following a rib strain suffered in the game against Eintracht Frankfurt. “He is still in as much pain as before. So, it remains to be seen how much progress there has been,” explained Werner. Eren Dinki has returned to the squad after a long period on the sidelines, but it is still unlikely that he will be available despite rejoining team training this week. Dikeni Salifou and Manuel Mbom continue to be sidelined due to injury.

Werner on the opposition: “Bochum are a side that try to gain the upper hand through their pace. They also have a keeper who initiates lots from the back, which is certainly a peculiarity at this level. So, you have to look at that and adjust your solutions accordingly with elements that suit us. We trialled that again this week,” clarified the 34-year-old.

Statistics show SVW's dominance

Head-to-head record: Werder and Bochum have met 71 times across all competitions, most of which the Green-Whites have come out on top. In total, SVW have won 44 times and on 17 occasions the two sides couldn’t be separated. Bochum have only triumphed 10 times. The last match between the two sides took place over twelve years ago, all the way back in March 2010. Back then, Werder ran out 3-2 winners thanks to goals from Claudio Pizarro, Marko Marin and Torstens Frings. Of the last 17 encounters in the Bundesliga, Bremen have won every game except the 2008 home game. The winning streak away from home has lasted even longer: to find Werder’s last defeat in Bochum, you would have to go back a whole 24 years.

A favourite opponent for SVW: Werder Bremen have a higher winning percentage (62%) and average points (2.1) against Bochum than against any other current Bundesliga side. Only against Bayern Munich have Bochum suffered more Bundesliga defeats (47) and conceded more goals (179) than against Werder (41 defeats & 136 goals). In the second division, Marvin Ducksch scored in each of his last five games against Bochum, with 6 goals in total – the most he has scored against any team.

Heading’s the game: The Green-Whites became the first team since FSV Mainz 05 in the 2016/17 season to score at least one headed goal in each of their first four games. These four headed goals lead the league this season; conversely, Bochum have conceded the most headed goals in the Bundesliga, thus far.
