After a fast paced start, the first half between Werder Bremen and Besiktas calmed down somewhat. Both teams looked to build up play from the back, whilst pressing their opponents early. That resulted in most of the play coming in the centre of the park. The first good chances came at the end of the first half and then the first goal came just after the break, scored by Eren Dinkci (48’). There were few opportunities until referee Altmann pointed to the spot in the 67th minute. Ucan converted for Besiktas and they went on to win it 10 minutes later via Akgün (77’).

Line-up and team news: New signing Oliver Burke started up front alongside Marvin Ducksch in the normal 5-3-2 system. Just like in the previous friendlies, Ole Werner changed the whole team at half time. Only goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka played the full 90 minutes. Jens Stage and Lee Buchanan both appeared for the first time in Werder colours in the second half.

Werder’s first-half starting XI: Pavlenka – Jung, Pieper, Ducksch, Burke, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Schmid, Agu, Gruev and Chiarodia.

Werder’s second-half starting XI: Pavlenka – Stark, Stage, Füllkrug, Schmidt, Rapp, Goller, Buchanan, Friedl, Groß and Dinkci.

Bench: Zetterer – Rosenboom, Nankishi and Woltemade.

First openings and an early debut for Buchanan

First-half highlights:

3’: Bittencourt dribbles with pace into the final third and plays it across to Schmid in the centre. He pulls the trigger, but his shot goes well over.

9’: Ducksch is fouled and wins a free-kick. He dinks it into the box and that causes some uncertainty for goalkeeper Destanoglu. This gives Veljkovic the chance to head the ball towards goal. His header doesn’t have enough power on it and is cleared. The following Ducksch corner is headed straight at the keeper by Veljkovic.

18’: Jung cannot continue. The defender felt a pain in his thigh and has to go off. Lee Buchanan will come on for his debut in green and white!

21’: Besiktas manage to get forward, with Souza taking a central shot. Two SVW defenders get in the way to prevent any danger.

37’: Montero lets fly from around 25 yards out. Pavlenka sees it late and it goes just wide.

38’: A free-kick from 20 yards out is whipped into the box. De Souza’s shot from close range requires a great save from Pavlenka.

42’: A Gruev corner lands at Bittencourt’s feet on the edge via a deflection. He unleashes a strike which is parried and then falls for Chiarodia. His shot, however, hits his own man Pieper and goes wide.

Werder fall behind after taking the lead

Second-half highlights:

48’: 1-0! Werder are ahead! Goller gets past a number of Besiktas defenders on the right and shoots. His effort beats Destanoglu but hits the post. Eren Dinkci is in the right place at the right time and knocks the ball into the back of the net.

67’:Referee Altmann points to the spot and Rapp is penalised for a foul on Delibas. Ucan steps up and slots home with Pavlenka diving to the right. Level again!

77’: Besiktas take the lead. Delibas cuts back from the byline to the penalty spot, where Akgün slots into the bottom left corner with a first-time finish.

89’: Nearly the equaliser! Friedl sends a cross to the far post towards Füllkrug. His header is stopped on the line by goalkeeper Bilgin. So close.

90’: Full time. Werder suffer a 2-1 defeat to Besiktas despite taking the lead.

Summary: Besiktas were the expected tough challenge for Werder. After a first half with few chances, SVW took a deserved lead but did not create enough chances to build on it. The Turkish side levelled the scores from the penalty spot before taking one of a small number of chances to turn the game in their favour – something that Ole Werner’s side were unable to do.
