It’s a game technically between the record champions and a promoted side – as Werder Bremen visit FC Bayern München on Tuesday evening (20.30 CET).  There may be a clear favourite for this one, but Ole Werner explained what exactly his side needed to do to take something away from this game at his pre-match press conference: “You need to have a perfect day and hope that a few of the opposition have a bad day. So you probably need a bit of luck for the game to go your way. The only bit that we fully control is our own performance. Plenty of things have to come together,” the 34-year-old said.

Squad news: Werder’s head coach will be without the services of his top scorer, Niclas Füllkrug, for the away game in Munich. The Green-Whites’ marksman suffered a back injury against Schalke 04 and will therefore not travel. Also missing are Eduardo dos Santos Haesler, as well as Manuel Mbom and Felix Agu.

The head coach on the opponent: “You’ve got to be careful when talking about the best team in Germany’s weaknesses. However, we’re going to be trying to look for space that we can utilise. The fact is that the room for error against Bayern is very small, both in and out of possession. The precision you’ve got to do certain things with and the speed you require is higher against no other team than Bayern.”

Good result last time in Munich

Previous matches: This is the 111th Bundesliga game between Bayern München and Werder Bremen – the most frequent match in league history. SVW is the second most successful team against Bayern behind Borussia Mönchengladbach with 26 wins in the top flight. While the last Werder victory at the record champions’ home turf was a long while ago, the Green-Whites took a point off Bayern nearly exactly two years ago, as Maximilian Eggestein and Kingsley Coman got on the scoresheet in a 1-1 draw in Munich.

Strong away vs. strong at home: Werder sit in fifth in the away table so far – the same position as Bayern in the home table. Statistic wise, Bayern are only marginally ahead in this respect: while Werder have taken three wins, two draws and just one loss away, Bayern have won four at home, with two draws.

A successful period: Werder’s 21 points after 13 Bundesliga matches is their best return at this stage in 11 seasons (23 points in 2011/12.) Last season in the 2. Bundesliga, the Green-Whites had just 19 points after as many games, sitting in eighth.
