Werder Bremen’s away trip to Bayern Munich ended in a clear defeat. After a turbulent first half which included an equaliser and a penalty save from Jiri Pavlenka, the Green-Whites ended up losing the game 6-1. “We lost the game in that period from the 20th to the 30th minute”, said head coach Ole Werner after the match.

WERDER.DE has summarised the post-match interviews of Marco Friedl, Leonardo Bittencourt, Marvin Ducksch and Ole Werner:

On the course of the game:

Marvin Ducksch: “We didn’t let our heads drop despite being 4-1 down at half time. We tried telling ourselves that it was still 0-0 and to head into the second half with that attitude. That’s what we did. We defended a bit deeper and then tried to push forward with our passes and to put the opposition under pressure. We made it more difficult for Bayern to find space. We defended well – the two goals at the end were silly from us.”

Leonardo Bittencourt: “We wanted to get on the front foot and defend with a high line. We wanted to play the same football here in Munich as we have shown all year. We knew that some gaps could potentially appear and we paid the price for that.”

Marco Friedl: “In the first few minutes it went back and forth. We did a good job, but then we switched off for 15 minutes. When you go 4-1 down, then it’s impossible to turn the game around. Bayern are certainly playing in a league of their own at the moment, but you still can’t go and concede six goals regardless."

Ole Werner: “Bayern Munich showed today that they are in a different league – at least in their current form. We got off to a reasonable start in the game. We won a lot of high balls, but unfortunately, we weren’t really able to switch the play. Every mistake we made was punished by Bayern. We lost the game in that period from the 20th to the 30th minute. In the second half, Bayern took their foot off the gas. We could have gone home feeling different at 4-1 but at 6-1 that annoys me. Still, I have to say that we’re not the first side to be on the end of a result like that here.”

On the upcoming game against Leipzig:

Marvin Ducksch: “We still have one left, so we have to turn our full attention to it. We want to sharpen up and finish off well. We’ll see at the end of it what comes from the game.”

Leonardo Bittencourt: “That game ticked me off. We’re not going to let one game take away from the year that we’ve had. We still have one more game ahead of us. Leipzig have a lot of quality, but we are at home and we want to win.”

Marco Friedl: “I don’t want to make more out of it than it is. We didn’t play well today and we will analyse that. There have been many moments this year where we have done really well as a team, and we won’t let today throw us off our track. We’ve got another opportunity to play on Saturday and do better.”
