It was a bitter evening for SV Werder Bremen: The Green-Whites were handed their heaviest defeat of the season at the hands of the league leaders and record champions FC Bayern Munich, losing 6-1. Anthony Jung had brought Werder level following Jamal Musiala’s early goal, before the Bavarians hit Werder with a flurry of goals in front of a sold-out crowd. The man of the evening was former Werder player, Serge Gnabry, who scored a hattrick. Leon Goretzka and Mathys Tel also got themselves on the scoresheet. Squad and formation: Oliver Burke celebrated his debut in the starting eleven on matchday 13. The striker started alongside Marvin Ducksch in place of the injured Niclas Füllkrug (back problems). Head coach Ole Werner also brought Anthony Jung and Christian Groß back into the line up after they settled for a place on the bench against Schalke. Niklas Stark and Romano Schmid moved to the dugout for this game.

Starting eleven: Pavlenka – Pieper, Veljkovic, Friedl – Weiser, Groß, Jung – Gruev, Bittencourt – Burke, Duksch

Bench: Zetterer – Buchanan, Chiarodia, Stark, Rapp, Schmid, Schmidt, Stage, Dinkci

Jung equalises – then Bayern only need six minutes

Highlights from the first half:

6th minute: 1-0 Bayern. Jamal Musiala scores. Musiala is given too much space after Jung is caught in possession. The Germany international passes to Mané whose initial shot is blocked, but Musiala picks up the return and slots it into the net from five metres out.

10th minute: GOOOOOAL 1-1 Werder, Anthony Jung equalises. Jung was the one caught out for the first goal, but he makes up for it shortly afterwards down the other end of the pitch. Weiser puts the full back through into space in front of goal and the defender finishes into the far corner. All-square!

17th minute: Pavlenka saves Choupo-Moting’s penalty! Jiri Pavlenka anticipates Choupo-Moting’s shot into the left-hand corner of the goal. He parries with a strong save. The referee had initially waved on Pieper’s tackle on Gnabry only for VAR to rule it a foul.

22nd minute: 2-1 Bayern. Serge Gnabry gives FCB the lead. Friedl heads Goretzka’s volley away but it rolls to Gnabry’s feet and the winger curls the ball expertly into the far corner. There is nothing Pavlenka could do.

26th minute: Goal, 3-1 Bayern. Leon Goretzka doubles Bayern’s lead. Choupo-Moting’s backheel to Kimmich opens up a hole in the centre of the pitch. Kimmich then plays it into Goretzka’s running lane before the midfielder knocks it around Pavlenka and chips the ball into the net from a tight angle despite being in the process of falling over.

28th minute: 4-1 Bayern. Serge Gnabry gets his second and Bayern’s fourth. Werder attack with a very high line and get caught with an ice-cold counter attack. After FCB break, Choupo-Moting wins a decisive challenge at the halfway line and then plays it wide. Sané and Gnabry freely sprint in behind. Sané selflessly lays up Gnabry to slot home and make it 4-1.

45th minute: Werder are inches away from a second. Burke can’t quite find a way past Neuer after a fantastic pass from Weiser. Then, only a few seconds later, Ducksch is millimetres away from intercepting Upamecano’s pass across the box and tapping into an empty net.

Gnabry bags his hattrick

Highlights from the second half:

46th minute: The first shot of the second half comes from Bayern’s right back Mazraoui – the shot goes well wide of the goal.

54th minute: Werder get lucky! Substitute Stark dribbles out of defence, but then loses possession to Choupo-Moting in his own half. The Bayern striker plays a lightning quick pass to send Sané through one-on-one. Sané gets it past Pavlenka but is denied by the woodwork.

58th minute: Gnabry picks Stark’s pocket in the penalty area and tries his luck with a dipping shot, but Werder’s shot-stopper makes a fantastic save to deny him.

68th minute: FCB combine down the left-hand side. From there Coman cuts inside and fires at Pavlenka, who makes another save.

70th minute: Ducksch’s corner finds Pieper in the centre, but the defender’s header lacks the accuracy to cause any trouble and Sabitzer is able to clear.

82nd minute: Goal, 5-1 Bayern. Serge Gnabry gets his hattrick. Mazraoui drives deep into Werder’s half and plays it to Gnabry, who first edges past Jung, Stage and the Dinkci to slot the ball home.

84th minute: 6-1 Bayern. Mathys Tel scores. FCB complete the half dozen as Werder once again have their own counter attack blow up in their face. Ducksch’s shot is cleared and, in a blink of an eye, Tel sets off on his attack that ends up with the scoreline at 6-1. Pavlenka can do nothing to stop the shot flying into the top corner.

90+1 minutes: The Referee blows his whistle to signal full time. Werder are beaten in Munich.

Summary: Werder began the game bravely with repeated attacking runs in the early stages. They weren’t stunned into inaction by Musiala’s opening goal. The reward: Jung’s immediate equaliser after some brilliant build-up play by Mitchell Weiser. However, Bremen failed to keep up that balance between attacking and defending. Bayern then mercilessly exploited every loss of possession by Ole Werner’s side. Within six minutes, Nagelsmann’s team had pulled themselves clear. When the game was already dying down, the league leaders scored another two goals through speedy counter attacks.
