A very hectic game, particularly in the closing stages: SV Werder Bremen’s 1-0 home defeat to FC Augsburg was full of emotion. And in spite of the result, the Green-Whites should not have left the pitch without some points. “It was a close game where it was decided by the little things. We had two chances at the end to take home at least a point, which wouldn’t have been undeserved. And that was despite the fact that, today, we didn’t even show what we can do in possession,” explained head coach Ole Werner.

WERDER.DE have summarised the post-match interviews from the home game against FC Augsburg:

On the course of the game:

Ole Werner: “The bottom line is that result is disappointing because we could have come away with the points. They caused us some problems in the opening stages, but then we really grew into the game. Unfortunately, we didn’t do well in possession of the ball today. Therefore, we couldn’t bring our own strengths into play and just didn’t create enough chances.”

Christian Gross: “We were in the driving seat today, but we didn’t make the most of it. We were not convincing in possession or in taking our chances. We will analyse that going forward and try to do better next week. Ultimately, we have to look at ourselves and our performance.”

Mitchell Weiser: “It was an even game. It came down to the little things. Today, perhaps we were a bit unlucky. Nevertheless, we weren’t good enough. We have to be calmer in our build-up play, even when we are pressed high up the pitch. Also our transitions were missing today. We have to work on that.”

On the hectic closing stages:

Christian Gross: “We knew what was coming. It was a feisty game with lots of interruptions. Maybe that’s just part of the game.”

Michael Zetterer: “I’m staying out of it, but the penalty decision took a long time. That adds to the chaos of it all. All in all, there were lots of small decisions that were difficult to judge. It was likely to be emotional, especially in front of a crowd like that.”

On the penalty:

Ole Werner: “The boys made the decision on the pitch based on who felt good taking it. It’s also part of football that sometimes you miss a penalty. In the end, it hurts because we could have equalized, which would not have been undeserved given our fight back.”

Mitchell Weiser: “We certainly won’t sleep well tonight, but Duckschi will bounce back. It was a shame it didn’t go in.”

Michael Zetterer: “We don’t have to defend Duckschi. It takes courage to step up in injury time.”
