Football under the floodlights on Friday evening at the wohninvest WESERSTADION. An evening of football in typical northern German weather ends in a 1-0 defeat for the Green-Whites. In the first half, Werder managed to take the lead after just 30 minutes through Niclas Füllkrug. The goal, however, was ruled out for offside. In the second half, Augsburg went ahead through Demirovic (63’). The excitement continued in injury time when Marvin Ducksch saw his penalty saved.

Squad news: Against FC Augsburg, SV Werder Bremen made one change to their line-up from last week’s win against Bochum. Ole Werner brought Jens Stage back into the starting eleven. Niklas Schmidt returned to the bench.

Starting eleven: Pavlenka – Jung, Pieper, Stage, Ducksch, Weiser, Füllkrug, Veljkovic, Schmid, Friedl and Gross.

Bench: Zetterer – Stark, Burke, Schmidt, Rapp, Goller, Buchanan, Agu and Gruev.

An even first half

Highlights from the first half:

3rd minute: A long ball from Augsburg sets Niederlechner all alone in behind the Werder defence. Pavlenka, however, shuts him out. But the goal wouldn’t have counted anyway as Niederlechner was in an offside position.

20th minute: Marvin Ducksch brings a high ball under control and shoots. His shot, however, is blocked and falls just behind Mitchell Weiser. Weiser sends the follow-up shot over the Augsburg goal.

29th minute: Berisha carries the ball into the six-yard box, but Pavlenka is able to make the save. After this, however, he indicates that he needs to be substituted. Michael Zetterer comes on in his place, and in doing so makes his Bundesliga debut for the Green-Whites.

31st minute: GOALLL for SVW! Niclas Füllkrug scores for the Green-Whites and gives them a 1-0 lead.

34th minute: The referee rules out Niclas Füllkrug’s goal for offside. The scoreline remains 0-0!

45+2 minutes: Mitchell Weiser is brought down in the Augsburg penalty area following a Werder attack, but the referee waves for play to continue.

Ducksch misses a penalty

Highlights from the second half:

48th minute: Again, it is Augsburg who start the better side. Niederlechner shoots, but Zetterer safely secures the ball.

61st minute: Niclas Füllkrug crosses towards Marvin Ducksch. Gikiewicz just manages to tip the shot over the bar. Nothing results from the subsequent corner.

63rd minute: The visitors take the lead. Ermedin Demirovic scores for Augsburg as they take a 1-0 lead.

75th minute: The game gets more and more chaotic. Berisha hits the crossbar for Augsburg before Werder immediately go down the other end. Burke is brought down when through on goal.

80th minute: There’s the chance for the equalizer! Mitchell Weiser does brilliantly in the build up; Niklas Schmidt is one-on-one with the keeper, but Gikiewicz makes a fine save.

81st minute: Marvin Ducksch chests it down to Füllkrug, who shoots from 18 metres out. His shot goes just wide of the post!

90+1 minutes: Another chance! The referee points to the spot! Marvin Ducksch steps up to take it but fails to find a way past Gikiewicz! The referee shows yellow cards to a host of Werder and Augsburg players.

90+8 minutes: Full time! After yet another chaotic final phase of a game, Werder suffer a 1-0 defeat to Augsburg.

Summary: It was an even game. Werder stepped up the intensity in the closing stages, even managing to win a penalty in injury time. Unlike other games this season, there was no happy ending this time. Marvin Ducksch failed to score and so Werder suffer their second defeat of the season.
