After falling behind in the first 10 minutes, the Green-Whites did excellently to regain control of the game and turn the tide in their favour, finding the back of the net twice through Nick Woltemade. Borussia were then awarded a penalty in the dying seconds, allowing them to equalise and take two points away from SVW. Michael Zetterer believed that the result was fair, while the other Green-Whites in the mixed zone reflected on the draw with frustration and disappointment. WERDER.DE have summarised the reaction to the game.

Head coach Ole Werner: “We were obviously hoping to come away with more today. When you’re leading 2-1 in the closing stages of a game, you naturally want to hold onto that and see it through. Their second goal came out of nowhere. Gladbach were almost certainly in need of a penalty at that point. Overall, we put in a strong performance. We settled into the game well after a difficult start, applying the pressure and remaining disciplined in the areas of the pitch that we had planned to. The boys deserved to come away with all three points. The result is frustrating, but the performance was good.”

Marco Friedl: “I felt the ball hit my hand and knew at that moment that it would be a penalty. It’s unbelievably disappointing. I think we deserved to come away with so much more than a point today. We took control of the game after conceding the first goal, and had the opportunity to make something of today. We have, of course, reached the main goal we set out to achieve this season, but we were really eager to win today’s game. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that.”

Michael Zetterer: “It’s always tough to concede late on. We had the chance to put the game to bed with a third goal just before – that would have been it. Instead, the game remained wide open and we’re left with just a point against Gladbach. If you consider the game as a whole, then it’s a deserved result. It would have been great to take all three points, but we’ll now focus on trying to win our next two games and then we’ll see where we’re at two weeks from now.”

Nick Woltemade: “We were ahead for most of the game, so it’s frustrating to have dropped points today. It’s too bad that we weren’t able to get the win, because we definitely would have deserved it. In my opinion, we played well today and were in control. To concede an equaliser after giving away a penalty for a handball is tough.”

Mitchell Weiser: “The draw feels like a defeat. We started to believe in ourselves following their opener and managed to equalise at a critical point just before the break. From then on, we were in control of the game. As a whole, we put in a good performance, but we struggled to find the net for a third time and were unlucky to give away the penalty. We have to pick ourselves up and keep going.”
